Simple vs Detailed COGS Entry View
Overview
SellerLegend offers two Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) entry methods. The Simple View provides rapid data entry for basic cost tracking, while the Detailed View captures comprehensive supplier and currency information for power users.
Key Differences
| Feature | Simple View | Detailed View |
|---|---|---|
| Unit Cost | Yes | Yes |
| Currency Selection | No | Yes |
| Exchange Rate | No | Yes |
| Units in Shipment | No | Yes |
| Provider Name | No | Yes |
| Notes Field | No | Yes |
When to Use Each
Choose Simple View if:
- You only need bottom-line per-unit costs
- You want faster bulk uploads with smaller file sizes
- You don't track supplier details or international currencies
Choose Detailed View if:
- You require supplier traceability and auditing
- You handle multi-currency purchases requiring exchange rate documentation
- You want SellerLegend to auto-calculate costs from total paid and unit quantities
Switching Between Views
Nothing is lost when switching — it's purely a change in the interface. You can toggle between views anytime; previously entered data remains intact. The system offers a toggle link at the bottom of the COGS form to facilitate switching.
Bulk Upload Impact
The Simple View restructures cost elements as columns (one product row), while Detailed View requires separate rows per cost element. This reduces file size significantly and prevents exceeding the 10,000-row upload limit.
Both approaches calculate identical per-unit costs applied to profit/loss statements and dashboards.
