How Do I Define an Internal Name for a Product?
What is an Internal Name?
An internal name is a custom nickname you assign to products within SellerLegend to make identification simpler. Rather than relying on cryptic ASINs or SKUs, you create meaningful labels that work for your business needs.
Key Characteristics
Internal names are:
- Optional to use
- Flexible — apply to some or all products
- Free-format text of any length
- Visible across all platform screens
- Instantly updated when edited
When to Use Internal Names
Consider using them if:
- Your SKUs lack clarity
- You manage numerous similar products
- You want better context in reports
- Your team needs intuitive product identification
Skip them if your existing SKUs already clearly identify products.
Two Assignment Methods
Method 1: Products Screen (Recommended)
Navigate to Products and Inventory > Products List, use Omni-Search to locate your product, click the Internal Name cell, type your preferred name, and save by clicking outside the cell.
Method 2: Orders Screen
Access Sales and Customers > Orders, find an order containing your product, click its Internal Name cell, enter your nickname, and save.
Pro Tips
- You can edit internal names at any time
- Use abbreviated or coded names for lengthy titles
- Internal names work alongside Product Tags for enhanced filtering
- Names are shared across your entire team for consistent labeling
